About Visualwize

Visualwize is a chess visualization training website created by Louis Holtzhausen.

Over the years, I have found that few things improve a player’s chess as much as training the ability to see moves clearly in the mind. Once you can do this well, many other parts of your chess start to improve too.

Many players study tactics, openings, and strategy, but still struggle when they have to calculate a few moves ahead. They see the first move clearly, but after two, three, or four moves, the position becomes unclear.

Visualwize was created to train this skill in a simple, focused way.

How the Exercises Work

Each exercise shows a short sequence of moves with arrows. The higher the level, the more moves you need to visualize.

You visualize each move in your mind, remember the final position, and then try to find the tactic in that position.

This trains you to:

  • follow move sequences more accurately
  • keep the final position clear in your mind
  • calculate without moving the pieces
  • spot tactics after visualizing a sequence
  • build stronger tactical vision

Why This Matters

Good chess players can picture what the position will look like after a few moves.

This skill affects almost everything important in practical chess:

  • calculation
  • tactics
  • planning
  • considering ideas
  • avoiding blunders

In my experience, direct visualization training is one of the most effective ways to improve these areas, because it trains the skill behind them.

The goal of Visualwize is to make this kind of training easier to practice. Instead of taking your eyes off the board to read long notation, you can focus directly on the visualization task.

The arrows show the moves clearly, so you can keep your attention on the board and on the position in your mind.

What You Can Expect

If you work through the exercises with full focus, you should gradually become better at seeing positions ahead. The difference can be profound.

You may notice that:

  • variations become easier to follow
  • tactical ideas become easier to spot
  • you lose track of the position less often
  • your calculation feels clearer and more controlled

Visualwize is not meant to replace normal tactics training. It is a focused training tool for one of the most important chess skills: the ability to see the board in your mind.

At the same time, you can also practice your calculation method while doing these exercises. Because the exercises are based on instructive tactical combinations, you can train visualization, calculation, and tactical skill together.
